Solving Statements Involving Pipes

Pipes and Cisterns

Pipes are connected to tank or reservoir, or cisterns are used to fill or empty the tank.

Inlet

A pipe or a tap connected with a tank ( or a cistern or a reservoir) is called an inlet, if it fills it.

Outlet

A pipe or a tap connected with a tank (or a cistern or a reservoir) is called an outlet, if it empties it.

Pipes Emptying And Filling The Tank:

Let us consider a situation in which more than one pipe is connected to a tank or a reservoir and is either filling of emptying it. The pipes or taps which is filling are the inlet to the tank or reservoir. The pipes or taps which is emptying are the outlet to the tank or reservoir.

We will first calculate the part of tank filled by all the pipes connected one by one and will then add  them together.

Similarly We will first calculate the part of tank emptied by all the pipes connected as outlets one by one and will then add  them together

Finally we will subtract the fraction emptied from the fraction filled in 1 hour.

We will then take the reciprocal to find the total time taken by all the pipes together to fill the tank.

Solving Statements Involving Pipes:

These type of statements we try to find the fraction of the tank filled by the pipe in one minute.

Illustration: Two pipes together can fill the tank in 30/11 minutes. If one pipe takes 1 minute more than the other to fill the cistern, find the time taken by each pipe.

A. 6, 5          B. 3, 5          C. 2, 8         D. 3, 6

Answer: A

Illustration: Two pipes A and B can fill a cistern in 12 min and 15 min, respectively but a third pipe C can empty the full tank in 6 min. A and B are kept open for 5 min in the beginning and then C is also opened. In what time is the cistern emptied ?

A. 30 min          B. 33 min          C. 37.5 min         D. 45 min

Answer: D
